Have you ever wanted to tweet in Swahili but just can’t. Well, worry not; Twitter has announced that its users worldwide now have an opportunity – through translations – to read tweets posted in Kiswahili, after the social networking site officially acknowledged the language wholesomely spoken in East and Central Africa.
This recognition will make Kiswahili the first indigenous African language to be used by the platform. Previously, users would be irked when their Kiswahili or native language tweet would be followed by an option to “translate from Indonesian.” Their concerns followed the launch of the #AfricanLanguagesDay campaign earlier in the year.
Globally, Kiswahili ranks as the most widely use African language with over 100 million speakers.
