Michael Joseph the former Safaricom CEO has been appointed as Chairman of the Safaricom PLC board.
The announcement made by the telco’s CEO Peter Ndegwa, noted that Mr Joseph will take over from Peter Ng’anga who was retiring after serving for 16 years.
“He brings a wealth of skills and industry knowledge given his contribution to the growth of Safaricom from very humble beginnings to becoming one of the most innovative, influential and profitable companies in the East African region,” Ndegwa noted.
Michael Joseph joined Safaricom board on September 8, 2008 and presently serves as Vodafone Group Services Limited Director of Mobile Money.
Additionally, he also holds the position of Vodafone’s Strategic Advisor appointed to the Boards of Vodacom Group South Africa, Vodacom Tanzania and Vodacom Mozambique. He is also the Chairman of Kenya Airways.
Earlier, Michael assumed the CEO role for Safaricom Limited from July 2000 when the company was re-launched as a joint-venture between Vodafone UK and Telkom Kenya until his retirement in November 2010.
During his time, he managed to raise its subscriber base from 20,000 to over 16.71 million subscribers. He also oversaw the launch of many innovative products such as M-Pesa. Currently, Safaricom is one of the top companies in East Africa and most successful companies in the region.
The outgoing Mr. Nganga joined the Safaricom board in May 2004 and was elected chairman in January, 2007.
Mr. Nganga is a former PS having worked in the Ministries of Finance, Foreign Affairs and Health. He has also served in the tea industry having been Chairman of the Tea Board of Kenya.
His professional portfolio has also seen him steer the Chairman of National Bank of Kenya. He is currently the Chairman of G4S Security, Car & General Kenya and is a Board member of the Kakuzi Limited.
