After dating for at least 5 years, Kenyan Gay author Binyavanga Wainaina has announced plans to marry his long term partner. He made the announcement on his twitter page stating that the wedding will be held sometime next year.

“I asked my love for his hand in marriage two weeks ago. He said yes, nearly immediately. He is Nigerian. We will be living in South Africa, where he will be studying next year. We will get married there, early next year.” noted a happy Binyanvanga.

Binyavanga continued to note that despite experiencing conflicts in their relationship since 2012, he is fortunate to have finally sealed a romantic connection with his Nigerian lover.

“We will have a reception for Kenyans in Nairobi sometime next year too. Nothing has surprised me more than coming to love this person, who is gentle and has the most gorgeous heart. I consider myself hugely lucky that he loves me and I have only recently fallen in love with him, but we have known each other and have been dating on and off since 2012,” Binyavanga revealed.

Binyavanga who in 2014 announced to the world of being gay, released a documentary in the same year explaining his decision. The video titled ‘we must free our imagination’ Binyavanga rebukes the uproar that surrounded his announcement. In the video he attacks the middle class laying blame on them for having a bankrupt imagination, hypocrisy, and poor parenting abilities.

Wainaina is the director of the Chinua Achebe Centre for African Writers and Artists at Bard College in Hamlet, New York, United States. He is also the founding editor of Kwani.
